Lower Yough Major Rapids

The Lower Yough is a summertime playground for whitewater boaters. Although it's the river that everyone "loves to hate" and many paddlers poh-pooh it, I think it's wonderful. Most summers I spend a week here in July or August. If this river were anywhere else and was only running ten days a year boaters would fight to get on it. As my late friend George said, "It's a great place to practice."

This page provides some waypoints for the major rapids, some topographical perspective, and the shuttle route. syotr...

Legal gibberish aside, here's what I tried to do.

  • Waypoints were taken at a point where the boater could stop, scout, talk or takeout, not in the middle of the rapid.Using them as a proximity alert should be fine.
  • The actual tracks through the rapids should not be used as a guide to anything, My preferred route may differ from yours.
  • I used a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx to record the waypoints. Other units may interpret them differently.

Part 1 includes the loop rapids, Railroad is also the "Loop" takeout which is clearly marked on river right.

Part 2 shows the middle of the "Doldrums" through the Bruner Run takeout which is clearly marked on the left.
Part 2

Shuttle route is from the Bruner Run parking lot, not the takeout. Shuttle

Garmin Nuvi 350

Garmin GPSMap 60CSx

A GPS system that's really useful for trails and streams. It can be used for highway navigation but I don't really reccomend it. It will lay down tracks, including elevation, for every place you go. You can easily mark waypoints (where you are right now).
This is the unit that produced all the tracks and waypoints that you see in this section of the website.

Garmin Nuvi 350

Garmin Etrex Legend

I used to own one of these and replaced it with the 60CSx for a lot of reasons but primarily for the color screen that my aging eyes could read.

A great GPS unit primarily for hiking and biking. Will record tracks, ie, where you have been. Will help you get back if you get lost. Not suggested for road navigation but can be used for that.
